16 Days of Activism

Everywhere she goes and everything she does should have been done without the fear of violence

25th November marks the kickoff of the annual 16 Days of Activism campaign.

According to UN Women’s Gender Snapshot, One in every eight women and girls aged 15-49 was subjected to sexual and/or physical violence by an intimate partner in the previous year. Gender-based violence is a global problem of epidemic proportions – one in three women worldwide will experience some form of gender-based violence in her lifetime, undermining all areas of daily life, including her health, her education, her work, and her livelihood.

Violence against women and girls or gender-based violence (GBV) is one of the most widespread human rights abuses around the world. It can take place in the home, in the workplace, in public spaces, or in schools or communities, and can include intimate partner violence; sexual violence, harassment, exploitation, and abuse; child, early, and forced marriage and other harmful traditional practices.

Gender-based Violence hinders women and girls’ potential, restricts their opportunity, and challenges their life choices which all prevent them from realizing their capacity and contribution to society.

The 16 days of Activism against gender-based violence is the annual call to action, a commitment and a collective action advocating for actions required to combat violence against Women and Girls.

This year, CARE Cambodia call to 16 days campaign illustrate through our support activities with local change makers in the garment sector, a story from the field of a young community advocate, our media presence and the support to Ministry of Women’s Affairs at the national and provincial level.
